The story follows Dr. Alexander Hartdegen, a brilliant scientist and inventor from New York who is obsessed with the idea of time travel. After his fiancée Emma is tragically killed during a robbery, Alexander becomes determined to build a time machine so he can go back in time and save her. But every time he tries to change the past, fate intervenes, and Emma dies again in different ways — making him realize that some events cannot be changed. Heartbroken, he decides to travel far into the future to find the answer to why he can’t alter the past.

As Alexander journeys thousands of years ahead, he witnesses humanity’s evolution and downfall. Eventually, he arrives in the year 802,701, where civilization has split into two species — the peaceful, surface-dwelling Eloi and the monstrous, underground Morlocks. The Eloi live simple lives but are constantly hunted by the Morlocks, who use them as food. Alexander befriends a brave Eloi woman named Mara and decides to protect her people from the terrifying Morlocks.
In the final act, Alexander discovers that the Morlocks are controlled by a powerful psychic leader known as the Über-Morlock. After a fierce battle, he sacrifices his chance to return home by destroying the time machine to save the Eloi and their future. The film ends with Alexander finding peace, knowing that he cannot change the past, but he can build a better future.
